Last-minute and after-Christmas shoppers helped retailers overall have a happy, if belated, holiday. But many chains ended up with a lump of coal.

Overall December same-store sales rose 4.2% vs. a year earlier, beating Thomson First Call's 3.4% forecast. But results varied wildly from retailer to retailer.

High-end retailers were expected to do well, and they didn't disappoint. "The action is in the upscale spending categories," said Mike Niemira of the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Nordstrom's December same-store sales rose 9.1%, and Neiman-Marcus' comps shot up a record 14.8%. Luxury jeweler Tiffany's …
