MOUNT PLEASANT-A 42-year-old man was killed Monday morning when his bicycle was struck by a garbage truck on U.S. Highway 17 near Interstate 526, authorities said.

The 7:27 a.m. collision occurred as the northbound Fennell Container Co. truck tried to pass the bicyclist, who was traveling in the same direction, said Mount Pleasant police Sgt. Sean Hethington.

Tony McKeehan of Mount Pleasant was transported to East Cooper Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from head trauma at 7:52 a.m., said Deputy Coroner Judy Koelpin.

The name of the garbage truck driver was not available Monday, Hethington said.
