Gartner is in the consulting business. It helps its corporate clients keep abreast of changes in technology and the way business and consumers are using them.
When it went public in 1993, it quickly became known as a source of thousands of facts about trends in how the public uses gadgets.
Its reports were in much demand, and earnings were growing quickly.
When its stock started its big move, earnings the previous two quarters rose 157% and 83%. Sales the previous four quarters were up 25%, 21%, 31% and 37%.
The Earnings Per Share Rating was 90. The Relative Strength Rating was 97. The Accumulation/Distribution Rating was B.
The company closed its first day of trading, Oct. 5, 1993, at 25.75, then moved above 40 in early 1994. Then a bear market knocked it down and let it form a 16-week base that corrected 25%.
