Advanced Power Tech. surges
The power chip maker's shares rose 13% to a 52-week high of 9.73 after it forecast Q4 sales of $12.4 mil vs. its prior outlook of $11.5 mil-$12 mil, as orders jump 31%. But Advanced Power, which in late Oct. forecast a small loss, cautioned that higher R&D costs could limit any profit upside. Analysts expected Advanced Power to break even in Q4.
IBM Q4 deals may miss target
The high-tech company signed $12-$13 bil in new computer services deals, analysts said, but that's short of the $14 bil IBM CFO John Joyce called a "good working number" in Oct. IBM gets half its revenue from services, so the deals are watched for revenue growth or loss. Prior to IBM's news that it landed a 10-year deal with Target, the company was expected to pull in $11-$12 bil in deals for Q4 '03. IBM shares fell 1%.
