BofA faces SEC civil action
Bank of America's San Francisco office received a Wells Notice from the SEC alleging it improperly stored documents related to an inquiry and failed to submit them in a timely manner. The No. 3 U.S. bank says the case arose from a Nov. '01 inquiry, and is not related to the highly publicized U.S. probe into mutual fund trading. The bank called the SEC's claims unfounded. Shares closed down 2% at $79.09.
Legg Mason inks Singapore deal
The money manager will buy Rothschild's asset management business there, adding over $1 bil in fixed income and equity assets to its portfolio. Terms weren't given. Legg, which manages $237 bil assets globally, will merge Rothschild Asset Management into its Asian unit. Privately held Rothschild decided to exit its retail and institutional fund management businesses in '02. Legg Mason shares rose 2%.
