2004 JAN 7 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- In response to the reported shortage of injectible flu vaccines, AmeriHealth announced that for the remainder of this flu season, the insurer will expand its coverage of flu vaccines to include the nasal-spray FluMist.
This special accommodation will apply to those individuals for whom FluMist is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC, following indications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has recommended the use of FluMist for healthy children and adults between the ages of 5 and 49.
G. Fred DiBona, Jr., AmeriHealth chairman, President and chief executive officer, said the company hoped the expanded benefit would help enhance the availability of flu vaccine injections for high-risk individuals, by allowing for coverage of an alternative vaccine for others.
"In what is expected to be one of the worst flu seasons in recent memory, we believe it is extremely important for those most at-risk for complications from the flu to protect themselves," DiBona said.
"By covering the nasal-spray vaccine in healthy children and adults between the ages of 5 and 49," DiBona continued, "we are trying to help expand the availability of injectible flu vaccine in our region for those who are at highest risk and who need it the most."
