The S&P 500 and the Dow industrial average both gained 1.2%. The Dow marked its highest level since March 2002. NYSE turnover jumped well above Friday's half-session level.

Amcol International leapt 3.03 to a new high of 21.23 on more than four times average volume. The stock burst out of an eight-week, cup-without-a-handle base, shooting past its pivot point of around 19.70. In June, the stock cleared a long saucerlike base, but was still trading below 10.
