2004 JAN 1 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Results from two pivotal phase III trials looking at overall survival demonstrate that Faslodex (fulvestrant) Injection is an effective alternative to Arimidex (anastrozole) Tablets in the treatment of postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer who have progressed following tamoxifen.
The trials compared the efficacy and tolerability of Faslodex versus Arimidex in this patient population. This is the first time since the approval of Faslodex that mature survival data have been reported. This research provides physicians important new information to help women understand their choices if their disease progresses.
"As breast cancer research evolves, women are being offered more options for their breast cancer treatment," said John E. Pippen, MD, FACP, Baylor-Sammons Cancer Center, Dallas, Texas, and a lead trial investigator who presented the data. "These data reinforce that women with advanced breast cancer have choices when other hormonal therapies fail."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Faslodex in 2002 for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression following antiestrogen therapy, such as tamoxifen.
Faslodex is the only approved hormonal therapy for advanced breast cancer administered as a once-monthly intramuscular injection.
The two multicenter, randomized, controlled phase III trials compared the efficacy and tolerability of Faslodex (250 mg monthly intramuscular injection) with Arimidex (1 mg daily oral) in a total of 851 postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer who had progressed on prior endocrine treatment.
