2004 JAN 1 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Cincinnati, Ohio, must restore voluntary abortion coverage to city employee health benefits and reimburse any employee who has had an abortion since city council banned the coverage, an arbitrator ruled.
The union, which represents about 2,500 city employees, filed a grievance after the council passed the abortion coverage ban in 2001 by a 6-2 vote.
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Ohio Council 8 argued the city couldn't change its healthcare plans without negotiating a new contract first. The city said it could change the labor contracts at any time because they were not specific on what medical procedures were covered.
