Foundation status will be given to 57 NHS hospital trusts in the coming year, covering 25% of England's population, the health secretary, John Reid, said last week. Speaking to the chief executives of 25 trusts that are already due to become foundation trusts, he said a further 32 successful applicant trusts will join the programme next October.
