The European Commission confirmed plans Tuesday, Dec. 16, to force Electricite de France, the state-owned power giant, to repay up to [Euro]1.2 billion ($1.5 billion) in tax relief and interest despite a pledge by France to turn EdF into a limited company by Dec. 31, 2004.
At the same time, the Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, said it was taking action in the European court to oblige Italy to revoke its so-called anti-EdF law. The measure limits the voting rights of EdF in its Italian affiliate, Edison SpA.
