SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will be forced to adopt a rice tariff system unless it can be successful in planned negotiations on the opening of the rice market by the end of next year, according to a scholar Wednesday. Seo Jin-gyo, a researcher at the state-run Korea Rural Economic Institute, said the government should prepare for the worst-case scenario in the upcoming talks. "South Korea's special treatment with regard to rice tariffs is to expire at the end of next year, according to the Uruguay Round," Seo said at an international seminar on the rice market opening. "If concerned parties fail to come up with a mutually satisfactory agreement, it will lead to rice tariffs on the part of South Korea."
