10 DECEMBER 2003 SUVA (Pacnews) --- Fiji could be the first country in the Pacific region to adopt a system that would allow thousands of deaf or hearing impaired people to communicate with the same ability as the rest of the population, if the Fiji Association of the Deaf has its way.
Representatives from the Association met last night (09 Dec) with Chief Executive of Telecom Fiji, Winston Thompson to discuss the need for a special telephone system - a TTY system.
A TTY system (also known as teletypewriter) is a simple device that converts typed letters into signals that can be sent over a telephone line. People who are deaf, hearing impaired, or have a speech impediment are able to type conversations rather than speak over the telephone. The typed conversation appears on a small screen on the receiving TTY and may be printed on a small paper roll.
