Storage start-up ExaGrid Systems has come out of its cocoon and disclosed a few details about its disk-based backup and recovery system, stuff that's supposed to leverage nascent grid technology.
The firm's secret sauce is software that supplies what ExaGrid executives term Grid Protected Storage.
ExaGrid says it's leveraged commodity hardware to create a grid- based storage utility that connects multiple storage servers in multiple locations that backup and protect each other.
The ExaGrid system is supposed to combine standard network file protocols such as NFS, CIFS and FTP with the company's Protection Policy Engine to provide end-to-end backup and restore, immediate disaster recovery, file-corruption protection, onsite/offsite vaulting, automatic data migration and archiving.
The company claims it's the first to apply grid computing to storage and integrate storage and data protection in a single product.
