Judgments on a corporate hot rod
If there's any way to take back the American sedan market, it will be with a car like Ford's 427 hot rod (Cover Story, Nov. 10). I'm encouraged by what I read and saw. I would gladly put my 5 Series out to pasture in order to add an American 427 as a daily driver. I'm already feeling nostalgic for another big-torque V8 like I had in high school-but this time it would be reliable as well. I'm in.

Build it, and my wallet and I will come!

So the Ford 427 concept represents "what's right with America?'' By this, do you mean the deliberate yet mindless pursuit of ever-bigger engines and more power at a point in history when the demise of civilization would best be forestalled by conservation of our very finite resources? Are government, industry and the public so resigned to the end of civilization that we're willing to accelerate our ultimate ends in a final frenzy of capricious excess? Or, by "what's right with America,'' do you mean a level of design and production integrity featuring drivetrain problems that keep this monstrosity from hitting 25 mph?
