The second option is getting harder to do, with the recent release of the new $20 bills that are more difficult to fake. The new bills, issued in October by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, have features specifically designed to thwart counterfeiters These include a new peach-hued background color -- the first change to the traditional green since 1905.
The bill's background color change is not considered a security feature, says Dawn Haley, spokeswoman for the U.S. Treasury's BEP. But she says it adds complexity to the note, making it more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate.
