Merck, Neurogen form alliance
The drug giant will work with Neurogen to develop pain treatments. Merck will initially pay $15 mil to Neurogen and buy $15 mil of the biotech's shares. Neurogen could get up to $118 mil in payments for successfully commercializing a drug. Neurogen shares shot up 64% to a 18-month high of $10.47. Merck rose 4% from Friday's 52-week low.
Genentech settles patent fight
The biotech giant agreed to pay Protein Design Labs royalties on asthma drug Xolair, psoriasis drug Raptiva and experimental cancer drug Avastin. Protein Design will get less than it had wanted, but Genentech confirmed its patents. Protein Design shares rose 23%. Genentech shares edged up 1%.
Celltech nixes Pfizer drug deal
The British biotech will take back the rights to its experimental rheumatoid arthritis drug CDP 870 after talks with Pfizer failed. Pfizer wanted a bigger cut of future revenue. Celltech will decide in the next few weeks whether to find a new partner to develop the potential $1 bil-a-year drug or develop it in-house.
