2003 DEC 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Activists and health experts are calling on governments and religious leaders to step up efforts to stop female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice imposed on an estimated 2 million girls worldwide a year.
"Representatives of religious faiths should be encouraged to confirm and support the fact that FGM is not a religious injunction, nor has FGM any basis, origin, or justification in any religion," attendees said in a communique at the end of a 2-day conference in November 2003 in Stockholm, Sweden.
