2003 DEC 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Ikonisys, Inc., a company focused on cell-based diagnostic products for the obstetrical and oncology markets, announced a major achievement in its development of Chromotest, a test to detect Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities early in pregnancy by simply testing the mother's blood.
Data presented at the 53rd annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics by Triantafyllos Tafas, PhD, chief scientific officer of Ikonisys, reported both the automated detection of the handful of fetal cells per million circulating in an enriched sample of the mother's blood, and the highly accurate detection and quantitation of FISH (flouresence in situ hybridization) signals from labeled X and Y chromosomes in those fetal cells.
