2003 DEC 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Digene Corporation (DIGE) announced that Cigna Healthcare has updated their cervical cancer screening Clinical Resource Tool to include human papillomavirus (HPV) testing in combination with a Pap test for screening women aged 30 and older as "medically necessary."
Cigna's Clinical Resource Tools are used in conjunction with the terms of the member's benefit plan to determine health care coverage for Cigna's 12 million members. In addition, Cigna covers the use of HPV testing as an adjunctive test in women with ASC-U.S. Pap smear results to identify those at highest risk for cervical cancer. Cigna's policies specifically reference the Digene DNAwithPap Test, the only FDA-approved HPV test.
This policy is consistent with both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and American Cancer Society cervical cancer screening guidelines that include recommendations for the use of high-risk HPV testing in combination with a Pap test for screening women aged 30 and older. Cigna's leadership in amending their cervical cancer screening policy to reflect the new ACOG guidelines shows their ongoing commitment to and leadership in women's health.
