2003 DEC 3 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) recommends pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination for all adults 65 years and older.
"Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia and bacterial meningitis in older adults. Current recommendations from CDCP's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices suggest providing pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine to all adults age 65 and older and to persons age 2 to 64 with chronic illnesses that place them at higher risk for pneumococcal disease," scientists in the United States report.
"In addition, vaccination status should be assessed for residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities on admission and vaccine administered as needed," said Cynthia G. Whitney at the CDCP.
