Council comes together, bids adieu to Griego.(Evening)

Tears were shed in the City Council chambers Monday night and hugs were passed around.

It was a rare sight for a council that has been known more for acrimonious bickering than cooperation.

The occasion was a farewell for Council President Vince Griego, who is ending a 24-year career as a council member the longest served by any Albuquerque councilor.

"Twenty-four years of dedicated service is incredible. . . it's unprecedented and. . . probably won't be surpassed," Chief Administrative Officer Jay Czar said on behalf of Mayor Martin Chavez's administration. "You've made this a better place …
