DURBAN, South Africa, Nov. 18 (AENS) - Disabled people are lobbying to be allowed to take their four-wheel drive vehicles onto South African beaches, where their wheelchairs are unable to go. The department of environmental affairs and tourism has received 80 such applications, but has rejected each one based on legislation that has outlawed four-wheel drives on beaches.
National director of the Quadriplegic Association, Ari Scirlis, criticised the legislation, saying it discriminated against disabled people's rights.
"Disabled people are not asking to take their vehicles onto the beach to churn up sand dunes," he said. "It is simply so that they too can enjoy the beach."
