Joy follows the discovery of donor cells, but the Wellses know their upbeat 6-year-old will have a tough time with the bone marrow transplant

Sitting at a little-girl-sized dining room table in her northeast Albuquerque home, Kailee Wells traced the outline of her dad's hand in green marker on the back of a birthday card for her 1-year-old cousin.

It was Sunday afternoon, and 6-year-old Kailee was in party attire: a green and black plaid dress, white socks and shiny black shoes with straps. She had time only for a quick hello and to finish her work of art.

"What's that?" her dad, Owen Wells, asked as Kailee filled in green at the tips of the traced fingers.

"Nail polish," she responded, not taking her eyes off the drawing.
