Drifters announce championship
Exact details are yet to be hashed out but there will be a national drifting championship in the United States in 2004. Granted, it will be only four events and the venues are not official, but it is another sign drifting is stepping out of the chaos of the street and onto a stretch of sanctioned pavement, maybe one near you.
The 2004 Formula D Series is being organized by Slipstream Global Marketing, the same entity that brought us D1 Grand Prix USA, the largest drifting event on these shores (AW, Sept. 29). The 2004 Formula D Series will be sanctioned by the SCCA with co-promotion handled by Vision Entertainment, the company that produces the Hot Import Nights sport compact car events.
An official schedule will be announced by year-end. Expect one round at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California, one at Northern California's Infineon Raceway, and two others to be staged in Texas, Florida or somewhere in the Northeast.
