Who are automotive enthusiasts and why do they spend so much time obsessing over their cars? To find out, we brought together a panel of experts at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and threw out that very question. Consider it free psychoanalysis for the automotively inclined.
"They are people who are more concerned with what they're driving than where they're driving,'' said Ford's Special Vehicle Team director John Coletti, who identified his "Three Es'' for cars in the enthusiast niche: expressive, extreme and exclusive.
Alex Borla, CEO of the performance exhaust company that bears his name, said he witnessed the enthusiast phenomenon when he was a car salesman: "I can't tell you how many guys came in and told me they wanted to buy their wife and family a sports car.''
"There has to be some drive within us that strives to be unique,'' said dealer and car customizer Beau Boeckmann, vice president of Galpin Ford in Van Nuys, California, that is known for its specialty "Galpinized'' vehicles. "Cool cars make us feel good.''
