After a long career in the auto design business, this was Nissan North America head of design Tom Semple's first trip to the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas. His impressions of the show:
AW: What's your opinion-is SEMA an aftermarket show?
SEMPLE: No, it's more than that, it's a technology show as well. I learned a lot by being at the show because there's an awful lot of support for the things that we do from suppliers that I don't think we're taking advantage of, and I think we could be taking more advantage of.
AW: Some of these show vehicles seem a reflection of Vegas-way overdone.
SEMPLE: The show fits this town. I prefer the tuner cars that are kind of stripped bare, actually made better. That's something that appeals to me, and that's something we've been trying to do with our engineers for a long time.
AW: One trend we noticed was the liberal use of a dull, matte finish on wheels and bodywork.
SEMPLE: That was quite popular back in the 1960s, late '50s. I'm not sure how ...
