Doi finally gives up struggle

Takako Doi probably has never been so downcast in her long political career.

"I, as the head of the party, am absolutely responsible for the defeat," Doi said in announcing her resignation as leader of the Social Democratic Party on Thursday.

SDP sources said Doi was faced with a tough choice after being defeated in her own constituency.
