Cheyenne High School's football team had its season come to an abrupt end Thursday when the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association ruled the team must forfeit tonight's Sunset Regional semifinal game against Centennial because of a fight Nov. 7 between the Desert Shields and Bishop Gorman.
A melee broke out as Gorman and Cheyenne players lined up to shake hands following the Desert Shields' 32-27 victory. What began with pushing quickly escalated, and punches were thrown. The fight lasted about a minute.
Cheyenne coach Dave Snyder said he expected to have players suspended, but didn't anticipate the season would be over. The Desert Shields had a 6-4 record; Bishop Gorman finished at 7-3.
