High Point -- While aggregate sales for the 12 retailers on the Kids Today annual scorecard were up 7% to $407.6 billion, net profits skyrocketed 27.3% to $8.5 billion, both compared with 2001 annual figures.
Even operating income rose nicely, up 14% to $17.1 billion from $15 billion a year ago.
The largest single sales increase in dollars was posted by perennial leader Wal-Mart, which added more than $26.7 billion in sales from 2001 to 2002. That's a 12.3% increase for the mega-retailer.
Add to Wal-Mart's ledger a 20.5% increase in profits, or a $1.4 billion increase, to $8 billion in earnings for the 2002 year. No. 2 on the dollar increase ...
