If we have one complaint with Mercedes' autobahn-storming E55 AMG, it's the almost 200 extra pounds the car carries over its E500 sibling. The AMG's supercharged power may rattle your internals, but the chassis lags a few steps behind when you arrive at a corner.
The same can't be said of the normally aspirated car: In our AutoFile tests, the E500's lighter mass helped it to slalom and stop quicker than the E55. In a perfect motoring world we'd combine the AMG's massive output with the athletic reflexes of the 500. Thankfully, Hartmut Feyhl, owner of Florida-based Mercedes tuner Renntech, thinks just like us.
Feyhl-AMG's former technical director and a 10-year veteran of Mercedes' in-house performance arm-takes an E500 and bolts on a lighter, custom-tuned version of the E55's supercharger. The blower pumps 10 psi into the 5.0-liter V8. Renntech reprograms the engine management system and installs a set of stainless pipes, which help the motor crank out 443 hp and 447 lb-ft en route to an unrestricted 186-mph top speed.
