The car most associated with Steve McQueen's racing epic Le Mans is the Porsche 917. But it is a slate gray 911S that dominates the opening sequence of Le Mans. For more than three decades, how many of us have lusted for a 911 after witnessing the sound and sight of Michael Delaney piloting that car through the French countryside?
It was fitting when Porsche's Tequipment accessories division staged a premiere showing of the recently released DVD of Le Mans at the Grove Entertain-ment Center near Disneyland that 911 owners were invited to display their vehicles in celebration of the model's 40th anniversary.
About 100 people showed up, including Chad McQueen, who owns the 911S his dad drove in the film. Vic Elford, who was in the movie, drove guests through a slalom course, not in a 911 but in a trailer-towing Cayenne Turbo. ...
