As Matthew Spring writes in the preface of his book, the lute was one of the most important musical instruments in Europe from late medieval times up to the eighteenth century. The lute was used as a solo instrument, in combination with other instruments, or with voices. Since the revival of interest in the lute in the early twentieth century, numerous monographs, dissertations, and articles have been written on this once-popular instrument.
