2003 NOV 12 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Vical Incorporated (VICL) has been requested to manufacture clinical-grade supplies of an experimental DNA vaccine against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus for development planned by the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The new SARS vaccine manufacturing order is in addition to Vical's DNA vaccine manufacturing orders for West Nile virus, announced in July 2003, and Ebola, announced in July 2002, as well as Vical's large-scale DNA vaccine manufacturing subcontract announced in May 2003.
All of the contracts are issued and managed on behalf of NIAID's Vaccine Research Center by SAIC Frederick, Inc., under the umbrella of a federally funded prime contract with NIH.
Vical's president and chief executive officer, Vijay B. Samant, said, "The initial outbreak of SARS has been contained, but global concerns over possible re-emergence of the disease warrant rapid development of a vaccine.
