The S&P 500 rallied 0.8% while the Dow gained 0.6%. NYSE volume declined.
Mortgage financiers had a good Monday. Last week, the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the U.S., decided to keep its fed funds rate at 1%. It also hinted that rates would remain low for the time being.
Flagstar Bancorp jumped 2.14 on above-average turnover to 24.44. The stock is featured in today's NYSE Stocks In The News on page B6. Flagstar was included in Thursday's IBD Screen Of The Day, which featured companies with accelerating earnings growth in each of the past three quarters.
Irwin Financial hopped 1.02 points higher to a 52-week high of 29.05 on nearly triple average trade. The stock broke out of a 16-week cup-with-handle pattern in heavy volume on Oct. 1.
Cash America International rose 1.57 on double normal turnover to 20.64. The pawn shop operator is close to surpassing its all-time high of 20.88 set back in June 1998.
