Housing affordability falls in Q3
The National Association of Realtors said the median annual income of families could cover 136.6% of the cost of a down payment on a median-priced home in Q3, down from 143.8% in Q2. The affordability gauge fell to its lowest level since Q3 '02, when it stood at 135.3%. Housing affordability hit a 30-year high in Q1 and remains near its average for '02, a record year for sales.
Fed: U.S. automakers facing glut
Chicago Fed President Michael Moskow said automakers will have to trim some excess capacity. That could hurt the Midwest, if the cuts are made mainly by the Big Three, which recently inked a new union contract that allows for plant closures affecting 12,000 workers. Analysts say the U.S. can produce 20 mil vehicles a year, about 3 mil above the recent annual sales pace.
** The Fed's Moskow said he expects U.S. employment growth to come at the end of '03 or beginning of '04. The increase in temporary help jobs for each of the past five months is a "very positive sign."
