TCL, Thomson merge TV, DVD ops
China-based TCL will own two-thirds of the money-losing business now and the rest in 18 months, creating the No. 1 TV maker in unit sales, producing 18 mil TVs and generating sales of $3.51 bil a year. Thomson will be TCL's top shareholder. The deal helps TCL avoid anti-dumping laws and lowers manufacturing costs. France's Thomson will focus on higher-margin businesses.
