Factory activity surged last month to its highest level in nearly four years, according to an industry report out Monday.
The Institute of Supply Management's manufacturing index rose to 57 in October from 53.7 in September. That's its highest level since January 2000. Readings above 50 indicate the sector is growing.
The index's new orders component rose to 64.3, the highest since June '94. Similarly, production scored its sixth straight monthly gain, climbing to 62.6. That's its best reading since July '97.
"This is the best report that we have seen in quite some time in terms of the overall strength of manufacturing," ISM said in a statement. "The picture continues to improve, and it appears that manufacturing will finish '03 on a very positive note, assuming the recent trend continues."
Order backlog, prices and inventories also edged higher during the month.
"We are seeing more concrete signs that the economy is doing better," said Gary Thayer, chief economist at A.G. Edwards.
