Pork rinds! It was about pork rinds, for crying out loud. Bill Elliott's "retirement'' press conference at the Atlanta Motor Speedway was a sales pitch for his new line of pork rinds, beef jerky, hot sausage and meat sticks.
Or, as Elliott described them with a straight face, "Awesome snack food products.''
The 1988 Winston Cup champion didn't address his plans for 2004, plans that likely will affect how NASCAR markets its first Nextel Cup season. Instead, we got, "I'm excited about getting involved in something new, learning about the snack food business and getting involved in the marketing side as well.''
Elliott didn't say whether he'd retire after Homestead, run a limited '04 schedule or run another full season with Dodge and owner Ray Evernham. Instead, we got, "This is a challenging new chapter in my business career. I have a lot of optimism about our ability to make a name for ourselves in the convenience and grocery stores across America.''
And Elliott didn't address persistent rumors that Busch Series driver Kasey Kahne will succeed him in the No. 9 Dodge. Instead, we got, "Years from now, my grandkids may look at me as being better known as the guy with his face on snack products than as a racing driver.''
Silly season, indeed.
