When a big-name executive starts a small company, you get what analysts call a pedigreed business. That's the situation at Inverness Medical Innovations, a maker of diagnostic products such as home pregnancy tests.
Inverness Chief Executive Ron Zwanziger spent the past two decades running two diagnostic test makers -- MediSense and Inverness Medical Technologies.
He and his management team did what many small business owners hope to do. They sold the first company to Abbott Laboratories and the second to Johnson & Johnson.
Now, he says, he's taking what he learned and applying those lessons to the incarnation of Inverness.
The company gets 45% of revenue from pregnancy and ovulation tests it sells to women for use at home. Slightly more than a quarter of the total comes from vitamin sales. The rest is from selling tests to doctors and lab professionals and licensing revenue.
Inverness' products for use at home share one common focus, Zwanziger says. "The information gives people greater control over their health, helping them make informed decisions."
