Software for managing digital photos and music on personal computers is now among the top features people are looking for in new PCs.
Of those likely to buy new computers in the next six months, multimedia software for photos and music ranked third in importance. They trailed features long considered most important to PC buyers: speed of main processors and the amount of memory and hard-disk space.
A new survey conducted by IBD's polling partner, TIPP, reveals that digital photography has become a mainstream activity for PC users.
About 75% of all hopeful buyers are going to use their PCs for storing and managing digital photos. And 57% plan to store and play back music on their PCs.
"Digital photography has conquered the families," said Raghavan Mayur, president of TIPP, a unit of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence.
The trend toward storing photos and music on PCs also could explain the need for more hard-disk space. Music and photo files are large and quickly eat up storage space.
