Consumer optimism firms in Oct.
The University of Michigan's index of consumer sentiment, little changed since June, rose to 89.6 in Oct., up from 89.4 at midmonth and 87.7 in Sept. A gauge of consumer views of current conditions in the economy registered 99.9, down from 102.2 at midmonth but up from 98.4 in Sept. The gauge of consumer expectations rose to 83 from 81.2 at midmonth and 80.8 in Sept.
ECRI leading index dips in week
The Economic Cycle Research Institute's gauge of the U.S. economic outlook eased to 128.3 last week from 128.8 the prior week as stock market losses and a fall in mortgage applications outweighed lower jobless claims and higher industrial goods prices. The index's growth rate slackened to 10.3% from 10.6%.
** New York City business activity in Oct. grew at the fastest pace since Feb. '02, the National Association of Purchasing Management-New York said. The city added 12,300 jobs in Sept.
** The dollar, buoyed by strong U.S. growth, traded above 110 yen, up from 108.74 late Thursday and Wednesday's three-year low of just below 108 yen.
