Microsoft, Oracle brands fading
The market opinion of the No. 1 and No. 2 software companies have each fallen over 20% in under 3 years, according to research firm Techtel's Demand Index for Q3 (see Vital Signs above). Dell, HP, IBM and Intel all get high, steady marks. Anti-virus fighter Symantec's star is ascending. The market still thinks relatively highly of Sun Micro, despite its still-sinking sales and steep stock sell-off.
Server shipments up 21% from '02
1.37 mil servers were shipped in Q3, Gartner said. Data show unit shipments rose more than 10% from the prior year for the 3rd straight quarter. Hewlett-Packard was No. 1, with 408,000 units sold, up 21% from last year. No. 2 Dell's shipments of 276,000 rose 28%. IBM's sales grew 37% to 220,000, but Sun Micro's fell 3% to 60,000.
