U.S. Shuts Saddam's Home Town
1U.S. troops moved to quell a tide of attacks from Saddam Hussein backers by closing off a village near Tikrit with barbed wire and checkpoints. Many of the 3,500 people are Saddam relatives. U.S. troops battled Iraqi rioters outside of Baghdad. Two Iraqis were killed and 2 soldiers wounded. And U.N. chief Kofi Annan named a team to look into Aug.'s Baghdad bombing.
Midwest Factories Pick Up Pace
2The NAPM-Chicago survey rose to 55 in Oct. after Sept.'s sharp drop to 51.2. A reading over 50 indicates growth. Production and new orders were strong. And the jobs index jumped 7.8 points to 53.1, the best since Jan. '00, boosting hopes of strong gains in the upcoming Oct. employment report. Price hikes accelerated sharply.
Teva Acquires Sicor For $3.4 Bil
3The Israeli generic drug maker said it's buying U.S. rival Sicor for $3.4 bil in cash and stock. Teva Pharmaceuticals will swap $16.50 in cash and 0.1906 share of its American Depositary Receipts per Sicor share, which values Sicor at $27.34 a share. That's 32% above its stock price before merger talks were disclosed Oct. 22. Teva slid 1%; Sicor soared 7%.
