Volume surged to near 2 billion shares again as the Nasdaq recorded modest gains. The composite index ticked up 0.2% while the Nasdaq 100 finished flat. Volume closed slightly below Tuesday's level, but still well above average.

Several stocks notched impressive breakouts from bases. Garmin soared 7.08 to 52.05, surging from fairly deep within its 4 1/2-month base to a new high. More than 3.5 million shares changed hands vs. Garmin's daily average volume of less than 400,000.

The maker of global positioning systems-enabled electronic devices posted third-quarter earnings of 32 cents a share, up just 10%, according to First Call, …
