Officials in Indianapolis-Marion County have suggested that library CEO Ed Szynaka's April 17 dismissal (see Late Bulletins, LJ 5/15/03, p. 13) was the result of unauthorized spending. A report compiled by Gene R. Leeuw, the library's attorney, lists numerous instances where Szynaka allegedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars without the library board's approval, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The report also claims that Szynaka paid a lobbyist to push for the removal of a board member and that there may have been conflict of interest as two board members have relationships with contractors selected by the library. The library's board, however, has said …
