The first World Library and Information Congress--also known as the 69th IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) General Conference and Council--met in Berlin for the first time August 1-9. IFLA chose the new name to signify the meeting's importance to those outside the profession.
This year's theme was "Access Point Library: Media, Information, Culture" (the German word for "access point" is portal). The Brandenburg Gate conference logo symbolized the theme.
