Ed Welburn only assumed leadership of General Motors design Oct. 1, but already we like his style. After reading AutoWeek's story on the possibility that a sixth Corvette Grand Sport was built back in the early 1960s and then vanished somewhere in the GM Design Center (AW, July 21), Welburn launched a search for the missing race car.
"We haven't found it yet, but we know we're looking for a tube frame under something. If it's here, we'll find it,'' said Welburn. A Design Center spokesperson confirmed the search for that elusive Grand Sport continues.
Production Tomahawk, sort of
Whether your tastes run to sports coupes or super scooters, this year's Neiman Marcus holiday catalog has something for you. Among the items: a NM limited edition BMW 645Ci ($75,170 MSRP), and one of 10 hand-built reproductions of the Viper V10-powered 500-hp Dodge Tomahawk four-wheel motorcycle concept that debuted at last January's Detroit auto show. For $555,000 (plus tax), you get a non-street-legal beast that is, in theory, capable of 300 mph. For more info, go to neimanmarcus.com.
Aston fast-forward
Aston Martin will reveal a concept at next March's Geneva motor show hinting at a limited-edition version of the new DB9. The British sports car company has been approached by several Italian design houses interested in the project.
