Bell Motorsports has sought the Daytona Prototype points lead all season long and the team finally moved to the front of the class with a win at the VIR 400 at Virginia International Raceway. Andy Pilgrim started the No. 54 Doran-Chevy on the pole, and he and co-drivers Terry Borcheller and Forest Barber took the win.
Bell's jump to the championship points lead was due in part to the competition's troubles. One of Brumos Racing's FABCAR-Porsches suffered suspension damage early, which dropped it several laps behind. Its fate was sealed when it was involved in a multi-car wreck with 15 laps to go. The other Brumos car was leading before that incident, but dove into the pits for a splash of fuel and a new front-right tire, giving the lead to Borcheller for good. Hurley Haywood finished second in the Brumos car with Darren Law third. Brent Martini and Cort Wagner (Ferrari) won the GT class. Paul Alderma, Steve Lisa and David Rosenblum (Chevrolet) won the GTS class. David Machavern and Tommy Riggins finished second in GTS, good enough to clinch the class championship.
Grand-American's season finale will be part of the Oct. 30-Nov. 1 weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
New look
Next year's Formula One weekends might have an expanded (by 30 minutes), 90-minute Saturday qualifying session with each driver allowed two timed laps. The proposal was agreed to at an F1 Commission council meeting but needs approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, which convenes later this month.
The team principals have been discussing possible changes to the format of the Grand Prix weekend, including the implications of the new-for-2004 rule of one race engine per car, per weekend. Generally in favor of Saturday's single-car qualifying introduced this season, they have resisted a suggestion to move final qualifying to race day (Sunday) morning. Concern is that when restricted to one engine, the teams might reduce on-track activity to keep the engine fresh as possible.
