Ganassi to sports cars?
Rumor has Chip Ganassi Racing entering a pair of Daytona Prototypes in next year's Grand-American Road Racing Championship. Word is that Ganassi has two of Riley & Scott's new MkXI chassis and will run Toyota V8s. The cars will debut in the Daytona 24 hour on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 next year and will contest the full France-family-run Grand-Am series. Ganassi hasn't confirmed the deal.
R&S will only say it has sold its first cars to a "well-known'' team. Grand-Am president Roger Edmondson predicted Ganassi could be the first of a number of NASCAR teams to join the series. "I see a trend whereby more NASCAR drivers do our big races, including Daytona.''
Haas resigns from the CART board
CART team owner Carl Haas has resigned from the CART board of directors. Why? Nobody is saying. Haas would only say, "My resignation should not be construed as a current lack of support for CART.''
PTG is back
The Prototype Technology Group team is returning to the American Le Mans Series after two years away. PTG will run a six-cylinder BMW M3 in the season finale at Road Atlanta on Oct. 18. It's an all-new car that builds on the team's experiences with the V8-engined M3 GTR, which BMW withdrew from racing at the end of the 2001 season. The M3, which is not an official BMW North America entry, will be driven by PTG's SPEED GT World Challenge lineup of Bill Auberlen, Boris Said and Hans Stuck.
